Our whirlwind Wayanad trip was very pleasurably spent at the wonderful Grass Roots Camp at Koilery. Run by Ravi and Rachel, coffee planters, Grass Roots is set inside a small coffee, areca nut and pepper plantation and has extremely comfortable tents with large luxurious bath rooms attached. The meals are fresh, and prepared with much love. You can book a stay at Grass Roots from here.
Though the tents overlook old tea estates, and there are plenty of walks around, spending a lazy day in your tent is very rewarding. We spent half a day bird watching and managed to photograph so many.
Not sure but looks like a Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher (Cyornis tickelliae)
Jack Fruits in the tree. They can be eaten raw, cooked, or ripe as sweet fruits. Elephants love them!I was quiet entertained by her acrobatics. The Indian Black Lored Tit (Maclolophus aplonotus). The White Cheeked Barbet (Psilopogon viridis). They can be easily spotted due to their calls “Kot-roo … Kotroo… “We were lucky to spt what looks like a Southern Flying Lizard (Draco dussumieri). It glides elegantly from tree to tree, with the help of loose skin on the sides of the body supported by elongated ribs to act like wings.Hidden amidst the greenery are the Grass Roots Tents. The Grass Roots Wayanad overlooks tea estates from the British era.A walk outside the Grass Roots Wayanad into the idyllic countryside. Each tent has a tiny seating space, like a balcony. The tents themselves are luxurious and well appointed. The large comfortable bed ensures you are fresh in the morning for bird watching. The Loten’s Sunbird (Cinnyris lotenius) is endemic to peninsular India. The female builds the nest and the young ones are fed by both the parents. The Dark-Fronted Babbler (Rhopocichla atriceps). They forage in flocks in the undergrowth of forests constantly making calls and uttering alarm calls when disturbed. Unfortunately I saw a single bird only…Wild Flowers in the resort.A nest of the weaver ants.

This was the kind of post that brings a smile on your face as you go ahead and check the pics. Loved it 🙂
Thanks Bushra! They were very cozy and comfortable But the excitement outside ensured we couldn’t spend as much time inside the tents. Always need more time when travelling 🙁
